Sh*t that’s a good idea
I spent a good chunk of my weekend drawing a sad poo 💩 Here’s why…
I’ve always cared about the health of our waterways, but since living in Bristol and being so close to rivers and nature, it’s an issue that feels even closer to home.
Here are some of the different creative approaches to make people give a crap about river pollution...
🌊 Draw attention to inspire action: it was great to join fellow paddlers in the Surfers Against Sewage Paddle-Out to raise awareness and call for action (hence the creation of the sad poo).
🌊 Visualise the issue: ‘The Floater’ is a surfboard made from sewage, part of a brilliant campaign by Mr. President for Surfers Against Sewage. The medium really is the message.
🌊 Make space to connect: the more people interact with local blue spaces, the more they’ll connect and hopefully want to protect them. I swam in the Bristol Harbour at the weekend and it felt surprisingly clean! It was lovely to see people enjoying the water in the heart of the city. Thanks to All Aboard Watersports for making this possible.
🌊 Tell the real human story: Rave on for the Avon is a documentary film that follows the stories of people who swim in the river and are fighting to protect it. Such a heart-warming and inspiring film, worth a watch!
🌊 Show a positive solution: it was great to see the floating ecosystems on Bristol Harbour up close during the SAS Paddle-Out. They are designed by Biomatrix Water solutions as part of the Festival for Nature.
Have any of these ideas inspired you? Any creative approaches I should add to the list?
